Simple Elegant Wedding Cake at Smiths of Smithfields, London

Simple and Elegant Wedding Cake Design

A simple and elegant wedding cake is a popular request when it comes to wedding cake design. “Simple and elegant” mean different things to different people. It’s wonderful to be able to partake in meeting the brief in so many different ways.

Aside from being highly customisable, they offer a unique opportunity for a wedding cake to create a stunning centrepiece without too much fuss.

A simple wedding cake means that you can easily accessorise your wedding cake display.

With the cake cutting being a wonderful photo opportunity, it makes sense to frame your shot with beautiful wedding details.

Wedding Cake Design Brief

When Donna and Matt got in touch with me a couple of months before their wedding, they gave me a very loose brief to work with. They wanted a simple, white, buttercream two tier cake for their guests to enjoy. The wedding cake consultation gives me insight as to the ambience that the couple would like their wedding to achieve. Donna and Matt’s wedding was to be a no-fuss, elegant affair, with the primary aim being a reception that celebrated their love. In line with this, they explained that they wanted a wedding cake, that tasted as good as it looked.

From the outset of speaking with this couple, I knew family were important to them. For their cake samples, they chose Cherry Bakewell, white chocolate & raspberry, lemon and coconut & passion fruit. When they confirmed their flavours, they shared that they had shared their cake samples with their two sons. The boys’ favourites were lemon and white chocolate and raspberry, so they selected these two as their flavours.

They married at Old Marylebone Town Hall, followed by an intimate wedding reception for 50 at Smiths of Smithfields, Farringdon.

It was a lovely August day, and the rooftop at Smiths was beautifully decorated in white and green. On arrival, I was met with a sea of foliage and centrepieces of reflexed roses on each table.

Donna and Matt have been together a little while, and each table number was an ode to a year from their love story. Bearing photos of significant moments from those years, it felt like being part of a live photo album as you scanned the room.

A simple cake design shouldn’t have to mean “bare”. The aim is always stunning, no matter the complexity of the design. When Donna mentioned that she’d be carrying a bouquet of reflexed roses, I swooned. Reflexed roses scream quiet luxury, loud romance, so they were definitely going to be the centre of the design.

Gold leaf is an effortless way to bring glimmer and glamour to a cake. A small smattering of gold leaf provided a great accent to the gold acrylic initials for the all white wedding cake. The small sprig of greenery provided an element of contrast and depth to the cake.

Donna used her wedding bouquet to accessorise the wedding cake table. As you can see, the results are stunning and meet the brief exceptionally well.

Sweet Memories Made

I am a big believer that a wedding cake is never just layers of sponge and buttercream. Far from that, it’s an opportunity to create a sweet memory from one of the most looked forward to parts of any wedding day.

Donna & Matt capitalised on this by including their two boys in their cake cutting. Talk about a core memory. What a precious moment of celebration captured for the photo album and beyond. Looking at these photos, it is clear to see that this was a real family affair. I am honoured to have contributed.
