Engagement Season is Here!
Here in the UK, engagement season is upon us. Engagement season typically runs from the end of November to February, when a whopping 40% of engagements take place. I don’t know if it’s the cosy season, the weather or just the fact that a new year is pending, but there’ll be lots of shiny new additions to ring fingers by the time 2026 is in full swing! Coincidentally, I was a December fiancée, and I can confirm that this season is indeed a magical time to get engaged.
There are a lot of reasons that this time of year is perfect for getting engaged. With Christmas looming, there will be lots of family gatherings – a perfect time to share the news. People typically book the few days of “Between-mas” (the time between Christmas and New Year) off, so that leaves a lot of time for initial wedding planning!

Wedding Planning
Speaking to bridal couples there is an initial excitement when it comes time to start planning. You’ll be pinning away on Pinterest, considering colour schemes and then, at some point, enter the killjoy – a budget! Whilst I’m not best placed to suggest how much your overall wedding will cost, one thing I know for sure, is what a realistic wedding cake budget looks like for 2026. How much does a wedding cake cost in 2026? Let’s consider the factors that will influence the cost.

How Much Does a Wedding Cake Cost in London in 2026?
The answer will of course depend on what you’re going for. Wedding websites will suggest that the average cost of a wedding cake is £400-£500. But that’s a national average. Much like the average house cost being £293k, how far would that get us lucky folk in London? A garage? It’s important to bear this in mind when budgeting for a wedding cake if your cake designer is in London. Such a figure is giving you the full range starting with one tier cakes right the way up to eight or nine tiers. If you want the short answer about how much I charge in particular, my three tier wedding cakes start from £780. You’ll find my other starting from prices here. But if you’d like to read in detail about why my prices differ from the national average, read on.
If you Google “Cheap wedding cakes London”, you’ll certainly come across a few links to two tier wedding cakes that cost about £190. These are likely to be from mass producing bakeries, with little to no personalisation, a limited flavour range and a very simple design. This is all absolutely fine if you are hoping for a simple cake.

The Difference Between a Bespoke Wedding Cake & an Off the Shelf Wedding Cake
An off the shelf wedding cake will cost considerably less time than a wedding cake that has been designed specifically for you. Before your wedding cake designer presents you with sketches, they will have conducted a wedding consultation. Here at Sugar & Stories, this usually involves an in depth conversation with both of you for about an hour. During this time I glean some information about your wedding, and your hopes for your special day. Following this, I would then spend about a week coming up with completely unique design options for you to choose from. With an off the shelf wedding cake, this process is completely removed, and thus the resulting cake could feasibly cost less.

Quality of Ingredients
It goes without saying that the quality of the ingredients will have a direct impact on the price of your wedding cake. There are absolutely ways to save money here if you are willing to compromise on taste. Just like with anything else, there is the full range of costs when it comes to ingredients. Margarine/oil can be used instead of butter, and flavourings or extracts could be used instead of real fruit and extracts. As a wedding cake designer baking for one of the most important and largest cakes you’ll ever order, I’m not willing to compromise on taste.
Luxury or premium cake design will invariably include baking with the best ingredients. To ensure my couples are happy enough that they write reviews like the below, good quality ingredients are important, and they cost more than their cheaper alternatives.
…then you get to the important part the taste, WOW just WOW, totally delicious, the best cake many people said they had ever tasted , when the cake was cut the vibrant red velvet drew gasps of anticipation , and this cake did not disappoint.

The Skill of Your Cake Designer
We’ve all baked a cake before, so sometimes it’s easy to think that there really isn’t anything to it. However, to ensure your wedding cake is baked to health and safety standards, to make and stack towers of soft sponge so that they are delicious and can stand for the whole day, is the very minimum a professional baker should be able to promise.
When you enquire with me, you’re enquiring with a baker who has more than ten years experience. In that time I’ve practiced, developed and trained to ensure I have the full breadth of skills to make you a stunning wedding cake. If you’re looking for a buttercream cake? I’ve got you. A fondant cake with handmade sugar flowers – well, I can do that too.
Obviously, the more complex the design, the more expensive the cake will be, but I’m a firm believer that there is beauty in simplicity. A simple, yet stunning cake is able to wow as well as any intricately designed cake.
Size of Your Wedding Cake
I’m sorry to state the obvious, but the size of your wedding cake will have an impact on it’s price. With this in mind, it’s good practice to ask yourself a few questions before deciding how much cake you’d need. If you’d like to keep costs down, it may be worth acknowledging that not everybody will eat the cake. If you are having a three course meal, maybe consider serving your guests finger portions. I always say a good rule of thumb is to aim to feed 70% of your guests with the cake. This way it’s less likely to go to waste – which no one wants to see! If you would like a tall cake, for the drama, faux tiers are a wonderful workaround.

Location of Your Wedding Venue
It isn’t uncommon to hear advice along the lines of “Don’t tell them you’re ordering a wedding cake, they will whack the price up”. Firstly, that’s completely incorrect, but there are a number of things a wedding cake incurs that doesn’t apply to a celebration cake. Setting up the cake is one of those things. Wedding cakes will need to be delivered and set up properly. It’s not a job I’d put on the bride and groom or any member of your family. Sometimes this means travelling scores of miles away from where we are based. In the heart of Central London, there’ll be congestion charge to factor in, and there may be driving parking fees. It often involves lots of liaising with other suppliers, and adding the finishing touches on site. Depending on how far the venue is from my base, this aspect alone could take up the best part of a day.

Making the Wedding Cake

On average, excluding delivery, it takes me about four days to make a wedding cake, and that’s if it doesn’t include handmade flowers. If handmade elements are involved, you can add anything from a couple of days to an extra week! All the little steps taken help to ensure a congruent harmony of taste, structure and decoration. There really isn’t scope to skimp here, otherwise something will be compromised.
So, how much does a wedding cake cost, then?
On average my bridal couples spend between £550 & £1350 on a wedding cake with me, centring at about £975. The lower end of the scale is reflective of a bespoke two tier cake, whereas the upper end would be indicative of a larger cake with handmade flowers. Either of these could be decorated simply or be decorated with gold leaf, handmade flowers and other elements.
Whilst these are ballpark figures, the best way to find out how much a wedding cake would cost would be to fill out my contact form.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes,
Jasmine
